Thoracolumbar Spine Fractures
The thoracolumbar spine is the area of the spine between the neck and the tailbone. The term may also refer to the area where the thoracic spine (upper back) meets the lumbar spine (lower back). Fractures of the spine in this area usually are due to car accidents or falls, but can also be caused by tumors and infection. Fractures of the thoracolumbar spine may result in damage to spinal cord or nerves. Imaging tests such as X-rays, CT or MRI are usually required. Treatment is tailored to the severity of injury. Treatment can include the use of a back brace, physical therapy, placement of cement in fractured spine areas, and surgery.
