ThinkFirst

The Greater Houston Chapter

ThinkFirst is an international, non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries in children, teen and young adults. It was founded in 1987 by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

The Greater Houston Chapter of ThinkFirst strives to spread the message “use your mind to protect your body” throughout the community by sponsoring and attending related events. In addition to these events the Greater Houston Chapter also advocates the use of the ThinkFirst curriculum intended for elementary and middle school students.

The curricula is available to schools for grades 1st-8th and touches on five safety topics including: bicycle safety, vehicle safety, water safety, sports & recreational safety and weapon safety/conflict resolution. Students also learn about the brain and spinal cord and how important it is to protect themselves from serious life-changing injuries.

The program for high school students focuses on getting the message across through a presentation from a medical professional. The Greater Houston Chapter is sponsored by Dr. Peter M. Shedden and the Greater Houston Foundation for Medical Research & Education. Dr. Shedden is a dynamic speaker and is available to present to middle school and high school students regarding the brain and spinal cord and how to prevent traumatic injuries.
