The Spinal Lateral Recess Syndrome
The spinal lateral recess is the portion of the spinal canal along its side edges. It is in this portion of the canal that spinal nerve roots travel prior to leaving the spine to travel to other parts of the body. The lateral recess is bordered by spinal joints and discs, and is prone to narrowing if problems develop in the joints are discs. The nerve that travels in this area can be compressed if the narrowing becomes significant, particularly in the lumbar spine. The symptoms that result – usually pain, numbness or tingling in the back and legs – are called the lateral recess syndrome. Spinal stenosis encompasses the lateral recess syndrome, but the lateral recess syndrome can occur without spinal stenosis. Treatment options include physical therapy and pain management. Surgical options, including minimally invasive procedures, may be an option.
