Spinal Intradural, Extramedullary Tumors

A spinal intradural, extramedullary tumor refers to a tumor that occurs within the confines of the membrane, or dura, that surrounds the spinal cord and spinal nerves (intradural) but outside of the spinal cord (extramedullary). These tumors can press on the spinal cord and nerves and cause symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling or weakness. They are usually seen on imaging tests such as CT scans or MRI. Occasionally, small tumors that appear benign and are not causing any problems can be followed by periodic scans. Many times, however, treatment requires surgical removal.
