Spina Bifida
Spina Bifida refers to a defect in the back portion of a spinal vertebra. This defect occurs before birth and results in a gap in the bone. Spina bifida may be asymptomatic if only the bone is affected and can be seen on X-rays. No treatment is necessary for spina bifida that is not causing problems (this is known as spina bifida occulta). Before birth, nerve tissue can move from its normal location because of the bone defect and result in neurologic problems that are often apparent at birth. Such problems include weakness or paralysis of the legs and lack of normal bladder function. Problems with fluid pressure build up in the brain are also common. Surgery is usually performed soon after birth, but other surgery may be necessary throughout childhood and even into adulthood.
