Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a weakening of bone as a result of a loss of minerals, particularly calcium. It tends to occur with aging, and can result in fractures of various bones, including the vertebra. The first indication of osteoporosis may be a fracture, but often a patient’s family physician detects osteoporosis before a fracture occurs. Management with vitamin supplementation, medications and exercise can minimize the effects of osteoporosis. Spinal fractures that result from osteoporosis can be treated with back braces and pain medication. Fractured vertebra can also be treated surgically with the placement of cement.
