Greater Houston Foundation for Medical Research & Education (GHFMRE)
In addition to the Greater Houston Neurosurgery Center Dr. Peter M. Shedden has also founded the Greater Houston Foundation for Medical Research & Education. GHFMRE supports educational and research projects that involve the evaluation, investigation and treatment of patients with various neurological conditions as well as programs promoting the prevention of traumatic cranial and spinal cord injuries. To this end, one such program GHFMRE sponsors is ThinkFirst, an international non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries in children, teens and young adults.
In order to reach the community and surrounding areas Dr. Shedden, GHFMRE and the Greater Houston Chapter of ThinkFirst started "Passport to Safety" in the Summer of 2009. The goal of the event was not only to give away free bicycle helmets but more importantly to educate children, teens and adults on how to protect their brain and spinal cord from injury by learning how to be safe when biking, swimming, riding in a car, around weapons and participating in recreational activities. In the summer of 2010 Dr. Shedden and the foundation teamed up with St. Luke's The Woodlands Hospital with the goal of expanding the number of event participants and reaching an even larger part of the community. Montgomery County Constables, Woodlands Fire Department, Lakeside Hospital, Texas Childrens Hospital, Montgomery County Hospital District, Woodlands Cycling Club and Houston Spine & Rehabilitation have all faithfully and graciously donated their time to make this important community event a success. To date, Dr. Shedden and GHFMRE have given away over 700 free bicycle helmets.
Greater Houston Foundation for Medical Research & Education also supports educational programs for students at many different levels of training.
